Motorcycle Insurance Quotes
You’ve purchased a new motorcycle. What now? Have you thought about protecting your assets from a liability claim if you are found at fault for negligence? Have you thought about protecting your investment of your new bike incase of theft or physical damage? If you haven’t, it’s time to not only think about it , but act now. If you carry insurance at the time of the accident, you’ll have a piece of mind knowing that you are protected. Since motorcycles are a seasonal way of transportation you really only see them on the roads during the spring and summer months. That doesn’t mean that you don’t need insurance for the other months.
Liability coverage protects if you if are found negligent for an accident. Check with your state to see what your state minimum requirements are. The coverage provides coverage to the “other guy” for the bodily injury or damage to his/her motorcycle or vehicle.
Collision coverage protects your bike if you are in an accident- hence the name collision. Your policy will pay to repair your bike, less the cost of your deductible.
Comprehensive- Also known as Other Than Collision- Protects your bike from “anything other than collision”. For instance, if you keep your bike in the garage and there is a fire, this comprehensive coverage will pay for damages since the cause of loss was not collision. Other examples are elements of weather, vandalism and theft.
Obtaining motorcycle insurance is a smart way to make sure that you’re covered properly. To be fully protected, make sure your insurance policy contains all 3 parts. There are a few types of insurance that can be purchased, liability, and full coverage. Just like automobile insurance, you have options on what works best for you.
Finding your best rate quote: Motorcycle insurance rates are developed on a number of factors including the drivers age, driving record, type of bike, their experience and the location. A young driver with no experience will be rated much higher than the 50 year old biker who’s been riding for several years. The type of bike not only affects the comp and collision premiums, but also affects the liability premiums. A high performance bike, or sport bike such as a Honda CBR, will be rated much higher than a Harley Davidson Sportster because of it’s speed.
When shopping for motorcycle insurance, be sure to get multiple quotes from various companies. Some known motorcycle insurance carriers are Progressive, Esurance, American Modern, Geico, Nationwide, and Allstate just to name a few. When comparing quotes, be sure you are comparing apples to apples. You cannot quote a liability only quote with one company and quote full coverage with another company and go with the lower quote. You are not comparing apples to apples and the liability only quote will not protect any damage to your motorcycle. Also, make sure you are using the same comprehensive and collision deductible on each quote. Find out if you are eligible for any discounts such as taking a motorcycle safety course or being a member of a motorcyclist group.
